About Margaret Rossouw

I have a great fondness for languages as well as mathematics.

This is how it all began:

In 2000, I started doing translation, editing and proofreading unofficially. At that time, I was a qualified physiotherapist and worked in hospitals and private practices locally and in England.

Following this, I found my way to education: I obtained the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (with natural sciences and music as my main subjects) and the degree HonsBEd cum laude in 2002 and 2004 respectively and taught at a school in between.

During this time, I leaped at the chance of taking mathematics as an extra subject at the University of Stellenbosch. I loved studying maths.

Training in translation and editing:

I obtained the degree MPhil in Translation and Editing cum laude at the University of Stellenbosch in 2006. Literary translation was one of my main subjects and also formed the basis of my master’s degree thesis.

I have been working as a freelance language practitioner in Afrikaans and English ever since.

Maths and languages merge:

I worked at a mathematics centre in Malmesbury on a part-time basis from 2008 to 2014 and have been giving extra maths classes for high school learners in Malmesbury and Stellenbosch since 2015. I enjoy helping these children. I was also one of the presenters of Maths 4 Africa’s quarterly Early Bird courses for Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners in Stellenbosch.

My involvement in maths has led to me translating and editing maths textbooks on a regular basis. I also got the opportunity to design content and write mathematics books myself (before translating them).

I wrote the Maths 4 Africa study guide for Grade 9, which was published in Afrikaans and English in 2020. I am also currently working on the Grade 8 study guide in this popular series. The colourful Maths 4 Africa books aim at making maths easily understandable by explaining important concepts and examples (including more difficult exam-type questions) in a simple way.

I am also co-author of the Grade 9 maths book in the Pythagoras series (Afrikaans and English). This book, which contains summaries, examples and questions with complete solutions, was published in 2015 by Fisichem Publishers.
